Auto Accidents

If you have been involved in a car accident, whiplash injuries need to be taken very seriously. We urge anyone who has recently suffered a car accident injury to seek a chiropractic evaluation as soon as possible, even if it was only a minor fender bender, so that our chiropractor can provide a complete diagnosis and set up a treatment plan for optimum pain relief and successful rehabilitation.

The reason we urge car accident injury victims to come see us as soon as possible after an accident is that we can catch soft tissue injuries that are often overlooked by emergency room doctors.

Symptoms May Go Unnoticed

Because symptoms of a whiplash injury can take weeks or even months to manifest, it is easy to be fooled into thinking that you are not as injured as you really are.

Too often people don’t seek treatment following a car accident because they don’t feel hurt. By far, the most common injury to the neck is a whiplash injury.

What happens if you get in a car accident?

Both minor and major car accidents produce a whipping action of the neck damaging the surrounding soft tissue structures (muscles and ligaments). Abnormal joint function is common after whiplash trauma and can lead to a variety of disorders, including but not limited to the following:

  • Headaches
  • Muscle spasms/inflammation in the neck and/or back
  • Jaw Problems
  • Pinched Nerves
  • Disc degeneration and arthritic changes
  • Chronic pain syndromes

Historically, only about half of all whiplash patients could expect to achieve full recovery. Past treatments consisted of rest, immobilization and medication for pain. Unfortunately, many of these patients were told to learn to live with the pain.

What Causes Whiplash?

Whiplash is caused by a sudden movement of the head, either backward, forward, or sideways, that results in the damage to the supporting muscles, ligaments and other connective tissues in the neck and upper back. Unfortunately, by the time more serious complications develop, some of the damage from the neck injury may have become permanent.

See a Chiropractor for Help

Numerous studies have shown that years after whiplash victims settle their insurance claims, roughly half of them state that they still suffer with symptoms from their neck injuries. If you have been in a motor vehicle or any other kind of accident, don’t assume that you escaped injury if you are not currently in pain.
